Built during 1921-1922, in Alba Iulia, the Orthodox Cathedral reflects two very important events in the history of the Romanian people. The first event to which he refers is the metropolitan foundation, erected by Mihai Viteazu in 1597 and of the historical event, extremely important, the coronation of the sovereigns of Greater Romania, King Ferdinand I and Queen Maria, on October 15, 1922, and the cathedral architect being Victor Stefanescu.
From an architectural perspective, the Cathedral is part of the Neo-Brancoveanu style and the national current of architecture promoted in the early decades of the twentieth century. The bell tower, 52 meters high, with a cross, dominates, next to the tower of the Catholic Cathedral, the perspective of the city seen from afar, but it is about three meters lower than the Catholic one. The entrance under the bell tower is guarded by the busts of King Ferdinand and Queen Maria, a sculptural ensemble recently added. The most important event that was organized here was the Coronation of October 15, 1922, when representatives of the houses were present in Alba Iulia. royal or imperial officials and political figures from all over the world, which reflected Romania's prestige at the time. The actual coronation took place in front of the bell tower, under a sumptuous canopy. At the moment, 20,000 peasants from all over the country took part, and 40,000 soldiers, from all arms, paraded the troops. In the message addressed to the assistance, King Ferdinand underlined the importance of the act that symbolized "the union of all the countries inhabited by Romanians". We can say that the act of Union of 1918 was completed at the official level, but also festively by the Coronation of King Ferdinand in Alba Iulia.
